CCTV9 - reforms

CCTV9 for some years has been a 24 hrs/day English language station, designed to assist Chinese people learning English. For mono-lingual English speakers in China it provides the only English language news on TV.

The station programming was re-vamped from 2011/1/1 - but when I seached on Baidu I couldn't find any discussion on the topic. (All the stations were re-vamped as far as I can see - there are 15 CCTV stations.)

CCTV9 is now 33% Chinese language, with the prime time spots taken by Chinese. Details from the CCTV program for yesterday follow:

中文 480 minutes (8 hrs out of 24 – 33%) 70 minutes between 0 – 7:30 (dead zone of 450 minutes – 15.6%); 130 minutes at lunch time (11:20 – 1:30pm); 90 minutes out of 120 minutes from 6pm – 8:00pm; 100 minutes out of 120 minutes from 9 – 11pm.

It should be noted that there is English language at different times on other channels (eg. occasionally a film is screened in English with subtitles) - I don't have any data on this.

What do poddies think about this? Anybody heard anything about the change in philosophy?

Will former ABC weather man Edwin Maher be out of a job?

A bit dated, but I found this: http://www.cctv.com/english/20040518/101546.shtml for those unfamiliar with his work.

Hi waiguoren

Thanks for that - nice one. We haven't seen Edwin Maher for a while, there are Chinese reading the English news, and at least one other foreigner (Australian?) Edwin Maher was certainly a familiar face on CCTV9 for us over the past few years. But I have no idea of personnel changes since 2011/1/1 - as I say I couldn't find any discussion at all.

I asked a Chinese friend in the media why they might be making these changes to CCTV9 and he didn't know, but offered the view that 'young Chinese people probably don't make much use of TV for learning English'. They keep a very close eye on ratings in Chinese TV.

Here in Shanghai at least, CCVT9 was briefly replaced with CCTV News, which was also all English and mostly the same as CCTV9. As of January 1, CCTV9 is back, and CCTV News is just a few stations up on the dial...and I think it's still all English.

Isn't CCTV9 the same country-wide? It's a national station. If you check out these times 7:30am-9:00am, 11:20-1:30pm and 6:00pm-7:00pm, 9pm-9:30pm, 10:00-11:00pm you should find it is all Chinese. Let me know if it is different?

I don't know CCTV News - doesn't it have a number? We don't have that here on our standard subscription, we just get 15 CCTV stations and 83 other stations.

I can get CCTV4 and CCTV9 in Germany via satellite. I often have a quick look to see if there's anything worth watching (no comment on that). Haven't noticed a difference yet in CCTV9 but will watch out for what you have observed.
