Jenny: 对

John: What are the tones?

Jenny: 钥匙,钥匙,第四声和轻声

John: OK, so what is 配钥匙

Jenny: 配饰一个动词那么配钥匙就是如果你的钥匙掉了你要去配钥匙

John: Alright, so this story is not over

Jenny: 嗯,对。那今天对话呢我们听到应该是两个同屋

John: So two roommates

Jenny: 对

John: And, uh, yeah right at the beginning we hear that someone lost their keys, right?

Jenny: 是的,她说‘糟糕,我的钥匙掉了,糟糕,我的钥匙掉了’

John: Alright, now this 掉了, 4th tone, right, 掉

Jenny: 对,掉,第四声

John: This could mean 'lost' but it could also mean 'drop', is that right?

Jenny: 嗯,可以的,就是掉在地上对吧,drop

John: Dropped it on the ground

Jenny: 唉

John: But if you lost it you can also say 掉, is that right?

Jenny: 可以,那我们也可以用另外一个词丢,我的钥匙丢了

John: And that is also 'I lost my keys'

Jenny: 对

John: or my key

Jenny: 嗯,没错。那我觉得在南方比如在上海,还有什么浙江江苏我们用掉比较多但是在北京然后跟北边的地方呢他们就用丢比较多

John: Ah, OK, so northerners prefer to say 丢了

Jenny: 嗯,掉了或者丢了都可以

John: Alright, but in either case when that happens you have to go...

Jenny: 你就要去配钥匙,配钥匙

John: Yeah, so this verb 配, it refers to having a copy made that matches something

Jenny: 没错

John: So, you're making a key to match the original lock

Jenny: 对,这个叫配钥匙

John: And another case when you use 配 is what? Another really common one...

Jenny: 是配眼镜, 配眼镜

John: So you're making a new pair of glasses to match your eyes

Jenny: 对

John: OK, makes sense

Jenny: 嗯, 配钥匙还有配眼镜。 那么, 啊,要配钥匙呢, 我们先要有一个original, 对不对?

John: Right, so you have the original that you're going to copy

Jenny: 嗯,那今天对话这个女孩儿, 她钥匙掉了

Jenny: 要去配, 所以她跟她的同屋说你的钥匙先借给我吧,你的先借给我吧

John: So first lend me yours, is that right?

Jenny: 对

John: Why is there a first here? 先借给我

Jenny: 就是你现在借给我然后我配好了, 我【换】给你

John: So first lend me yours, I'll have the key made, and then return it

Jenny: 对

John: So it's kind of like, 'lend me yours for now'

Jenny: 嗯

Jenny: 对的, 就现在借给我

John: So the word to 'lend me' is...

Jenny: 借给我,借给我

John: All right, lend it to me

Jenny: 对

John: Got it

Jenny: 嗯,然后她这个同屋说好拿着,好的, 拿着

John: OK, so 拿着 that's kind of like 'take it'

Jenny: 对, 就是你拿着你拿好

John: Can you just say 拿?

Jenny: 哦, 不可以

John: Really, why? Is that weird?

Jenny: 嗯,我觉得可能是【yingjie】的关系啊,

Jenny: 关说一个字很奇怪

John: Yeah, that's true, in Chinese in a lot of cases you just use one syllable, it's weird, they like to have two syllables

Jenny: 对, 这个1syllable很lonely

John: Could you say 拿走?

Jenny: 啊。。。

John: 拿去?

Jenny: 哦, 拿去可以, 拿走好像就是不用【换】了, 就

John: Run off with it

Jenny: 对, 所以拿去或者拿着都可以

John: OK, so this 着 is kind of like 'take it and hold onto it', the, the action will continue over time

Jenny: 嗯, 是的
