Questions on living in China

My family is considering moving to China, but we have a few questions we're hoping the Chinesepod members might help us answer:

1) If I come to China on a visitor visa, can I, say a few months later, look for work, and if I find a good match, change my visa to a work visa?

2) Do foreigners who work in China pay Chinese taxes such as the bundle package called si1jin4 四金 that includes retirement, healthcare, housing, and unemployment?

3) Do foreigners enjoy any benefits in China (such as retirement/pension if they work long enough, health insurance, etc.)?

4) How frequently must foreigners renew their Visa?  For instance, if I have a job in China, do I have to go to the police station every year to request permission to continue living in the country?
