John: Hey everybody, you're listening to ChinesePod, this is an Intermediate lesson and I'm John.

迪璐: 大家好,我是迪璐。

John: And today we've got a fairly simple lesson. Its for all you people who have been sent to China by your company.

迪璐: 而且呢,今天我们在一个派对上面。

John: 派对. So we're talking about a party.

迪璐: 是的。

John: That's two 4th tones. And the strange thing is that this word 'party' is kind of related to being sent to China, even if you're not sent to party.

迪璐: You may not understand John for now,但是我们先来听一下对话吧。

John: Alright let's listen. We'll go over everything. Here we go.

Dialog

John: So the connection between 派对 and being sent to China may not be totally apparent, but we're going to cover it. In the first line of the dialog we hear 派对.

迪璐: 对。欢迎你来参加派对。欢迎你来参加派对。

John: 参加派对。参加 is two 1st tones.

迪璐: 是的。两个第一声。参加。

John: And then 派对 is ...

迪璐: 两个第四声。派对。参加派对。

John: 'To take part in a party'. In English we often say just 'go to a party', but in Chinese its usually 参加.

迪璐: [??]你当然也可以说:去派对。但是参加派对会比较formal一些。

John: OK. So 派对 is a noun, 'a party'.

迪璐: 是的。是一个名词。

John: In English we often say 'I'm going to go party'.

迪璐: 中文里面不把'派对'当动词用。

John: So 派对 is not a verb, its just a noun.

迪璐: 是的。

John: Got it. So when this guy turns up at a party, the girl who's welcoming him, she calls him a 帅哥.

迪璐: 对的。

John: And then she asks him a question.

迪璐: 你来中国多久了?你来中国多久了?

John: So hopefully you're getting good at answering this question. The 了 on the end indicates that its up until now.

迪璐: 对。到现在为止。

John: So when you give an answer, your answer in going to include a 了 also, because you're still in China.

迪璐: And here we have 一年多了。一年多了。

John: And then she starts asking questions about the past. And you'll notice when Chinese people ask questions about the past, they frequently use the 是...的 pattern.

迪璐: 对。是来中国工作的吗?是来中国工作的吗?

John: So she's asking for the reason you came to China, and she's saying 'was it for work'?

迪璐: 对。然后他的回答也是一样的pattern。是公司派我来的。是公司派我来的。

John: Let's look at that part. So 公司派我来.

迪璐: 这个派呢就是send的意思。

John: So when a company sends someone somewhere for whatever purposes, the verb is ...

迪璐: 派。派。就是派对的派。

John: So the same character actually. 派, 4th tone. Its not actually related, but it is the same character.

迪璐: 是的。是公司派我来的。

John: So 'the company sent me here'. And like I mentioned, 是...的 is often used for clarifying details about the past. Why it was that he came.

迪璐: 没错。

John: And then he says that he's studying Chinese. Where is he studying?

迪璐: 在一个语言学校。一个语言学校。

迪璐: 学校。学校。第二声和第四声。

John: 语言学校.

迪璐: 对。没错。

John: This guy has a pretty generous company. They're actually helping to pay for his Chinese education.

迪璐: 这个很棒,对。他说:我们公司有学中文的补贴。我们公司有学中文的补贴。

John: The central word here for subsidy or stipend or some kind of allowance provided by a company is ...

John: 3rd, 1st. 补贴. And then if you want to specify what type of allowance, you put something before it like a housing allowance.

迪璐: 对。比如说:租房补贴。

John: 'Rent apartment'.

迪璐: 还有:交通补贴。

John: 'Transportation allowance', stipend, whatever. But in this case it was ...

迪璐: 学中文的补贴。
