Taking the idea from the recent movie "Jumper" where the characters possess the great ability to disappear and reappear anywhere they like - what would you buy if you 'jumped' into a Shanghai bookstore that is hard to get in the West?

Actually, I was wishing I could go to a Chinese book store the other day, even though I visited them frequently when I lived in China. For some reason, even though I am here to study, I stupidly forgot to bring my favorite non-electronic dictionary to Scotland... weirdest thing since I depended on that so much... before I bought my cell phone I use now in 2006... that has an electronic Chinese dictionary which I depend on so much (even though it doesn't tell you the pinyin for words you look up in English or with strokes), and then last weekend I lost my phone (miraculously getting it back last Friday!) and I was lost for 5 days.... oh pity me. :P So when I asked my teacher where I could by a good Chinese-English dictionary, she said "Just wait until you go to China this summer and buy one." And I glared at her, knowing she knew my situation, and said, "Do you want to wait for me to hand in my homework in the summer rather than Friday???" Oh, I miss the dictionary I could by in China for $4 yet have to pay like $30 here in Britain for... grrr... (but I did get my phone back, so it will just have to wait)

Sorry to hear you are missing your favourite dictionary. What's its name - I need to get a decent dictionary. I have been using the pocket variety so far but need to move up to something bigger.

I have been using Collins Chinese Dictionary which is both Chinese/English and English/Chinese and has character and pinyin. I especially like it because it uses two colors which makes things easier to look up. My Chinese friends really seem to like it too. The only problem is that it is quite thick.

wei1xiao4, I picked up the same dictionary in Taipei recently, and also really love it. You wouldn't think the two-color printing would be a big deal, but it really speeds up finding a word. The first time I went into a Chinese bookstore, I was totally overwhelmed....but absolutely love them. I could spend all day in one.

Rich - what is the name of the non-electronic dictionary that you love so much?
