iPod touch (or iPhone) Chinese language input?

Does anyone have an iPod touch or iPhone with Chinese characters?

Do you use the touch screen to directly enter characters or the keyboard an Pinyin?

Could I add Chinese language support to my iPhone touch in addition to German (or English) and switch between input methods?

I hope this is not too off-topic.

Thanx!

Highly interested in an answer to this one myself. Just canceled my mobile phone contract with the intend to replace my MDA Pro.

Grateful for any help.  How can I get the RSS feed to show in iTunes only the lessons I am subscribed to?  It is showing "media" and "advanced" and I can't seem to get rid of those.

Also how can I get other lessons I have bookmarked to show up?

Thank you!

I have the iPod Touch, and it displays Chinese characters well enough, but there isn't support for inputing them that I know of. There should be a way!

jamestheron: I simply forgot about th iPod Touch displaying Chinese characters as I am using daily to listen to Chinesepod. Now, the more interesting bit is if I can use it to input Chinese with the touch screen. This could make the iPod Touch a device for me to practice Chinese characters etc. Maybe, the iChinese is an application for that. Although, I am not sure if I want to do a jailbreak operation AND it looks like it is iPhone only.

I use locally(i.e. Shanghai)-produced iCosta. Add http://iphone.freecoder.org/rep into the list of Sources in your Installer app to make iCosta available. Then find it in the Localization menu and choose from a variety of Chinese input methods to use. More instructions can be found at: http://iphone.freecoder.org/iCosta.html

iCosta looks like a pinyin app without using the touch screen as a stroke input device.

Hey guys,

This might be old news as this post hasn't been updated in about 18 months, but I've just received an iPod touch for Christmas and I'm blown away by the Chinese resources you can pack into this little machine!

On mine Chinese can be handwritten without adding any applications at all, just follow these simple steps:

1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards

2. Scroll down to Chinese and turn pinyin and handwriting on.

I've downloaded QQ onto my iPod as well so now I can chat in QQ with handwritten characters! Absolutely blown away...

Not to mention the awesome Chinesepod home-grown apps!

Yeah, it's pretty sweet, though the handwriting recognition isn't very good.

I've really had the desire to buy one.  I just wonder how much I would use it.  I guess it depends on how much you are away from the computer.

hkboy: It's worth it just to get SRS flashcard programs that sync with ChinesePod and let you study on the go. Doing flashcards in front of the computer is quite tedious.

ditto My contract is up for renewal in a couple of months and whilst the final decision hasn't been made, the iPhone tariff is a serious contender. If I were able to use it to type/read/learn Chinese, that would be the perfect excuse (who am I kidding). The only thing I've seen so far is this: http://chinesepod.com/connections/viewpost/billgloveruk/connect/Learn+Chinese+Characters+on+the+iPhone

In my view it is faster to use pinyin input on a phone than write the characters. My phone is pretty intelligent but dated - it's a new Nokia with technology that is about three years old.  (Yes, I don't have an i-Phone!  I don't like to spend more than about US$40 for a new phone.)  Once you input one character several likely words are suggested.  I reckon that, for me, it is about as fast as texting in English.  And so cool.

Yes, I realise that I'm a slow adapter to technology so this may not be of great interest to you guys...

I agree that pinyin is faster, more accurate and certainly much easier. That last one is the reason why I want to get into handwriting the characters for QQ.

I've really allowed my handwriting to slack way behind my other skills. I reckon this is largely down to having no practical use for it... until now that is! So this is why I'm so excited about my new toy.

Has anybody been using Skritter on an iPhone/iPod touch? As far as I'm aware you need to install Flash Player to run it, and that can only be done once you have jail broken your device. Does anybody have any information on this? Or does anybody now of a similar programme/application?

Looking forward to being even more blown away.

Technical question of interest

Aylish, you just scored a sale for Apple, and probably also for Plecodict... But I'd like to settle a few questions that should be of interest here.

1. I read that the jailbreak for Touch G3 is currently "tethered" only, meaning that the jailbreak is lost if the device is turned off. Can anyone confirm that? "There is currently no untethered jailbreak available for the iPod touch 3G." source

2. I've read in more than one place that the *current* 8Gb Touch is still 2G. Has anyone here jailbroken one yet?

Thank you. I can't keep track of this stuff.

Simon,

Is that a different flashcard program than the chinesepod one?
