Obama's Chinese Sister-in-Law

Story in Monday's New York Times about how Barack Obama's brother Mark is living in China and engaged to a Chinese woman. Not that he has lots of free time right now, but maybe Barack will start tuning in to Chinesepod in order to be able to better connect with his Chinese sister-in-law-to-be and welcome her to his far-flung family. I think Obama could do a great promo and show intro for Chinesepod: "Can we learn Mandarin? Yes we can! Will we able in the near future to search Conversation posts? Yes we can!! Can we successfully make that challenging Elementary-Intermediate leap? Yes we can!!"

是的我们能,我们会。 כן אנחנו יכולים “Ken Anachnu Yecholim” “Yes, we can.” Si Se Puede! It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation. Yes we can. It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom. Yes we can.

We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change. We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics...they will only grow louder and more dissonant ........... We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. ... Yes we can.

is that likely to happen though, I mean first Obama nomination and then his election, what are the odds? Not sure about political impact but would symbolically be stunning.

There has been so much media coverage of Barack Obama and yet, amazingly, I still know very little about him. At least now I have one fact I can use to impress people. It seems as if he has family connections all over the world. I vaguely remember an interview with a lady here in the UK who is somehow related to him. I wonder how much of an influence family ties would have on foreign policy.

billgloveruk, if he gets the nomination, you'll probably hear more about him than you wanted to know. He's the mixed race son of an African father, white mother (from Kansas) who spent part of his childhood in Indonesia. Mark is one of his many "half" siblings, also mixed race. So, Mark and his new bride are are blessed with children would the name be... Jimmy/Nancy Wang Obama? Now that's all-American!

Pure Propaganda... *wink* >>Can we become reasonably fluent in Chinese? ...Well, not sure... (At this point, B.O. enters the stage, smiles, pats the doubtful poddie and yells "Yes we can!" )<< >>We've been asked to pause for a reality check.<< Just done that. Cr**. Still 250 characters behind. >>I vaguely remember an interview with a lady here in the UK who is somehow related to him.<< If we count even those distant relatives, our whole concept of relatedness would shatter. For that matter, I could be related to "the other O*ama" (tongue-in-cheek), after all, Arabs tend to have huge families (I must know, I have 6 siblings), so chances are someone, like 200yrs ago, initiated my family strain and the one mentioned. (just kidding) ---- I'm sure, if Clinton could be lured onto CP (by tipping her off about Asian economy or something), she'd tell us about her being able to pull from her strong background-of-everything and that it's experience that matters, even ín language acquisition... ---- I won't get started on the compatibility of the republican candidate with Mandarin...;-) ---- By the way, can anyone imitate Obama's voice (with the promo sentences in the initial post) and put that on YouTube? Just imagine... ---- Right, back to serious again.

"We must shed the fear of the 4 tones, which has crippled our progress as a community. We must have the audacity to listen to every episode of Qing Wen with open minds. We must celebrate the differences between "zenme" and "zheme" and "shenme" and hope to unite them in outstanding paragraphs of our own making"
