I recently made a first attempt at video, hoping to showcase the many fascinating facets of China. Aric Queen, an old friend of nine and ChinesePod, helped to shoot, semi direct, semi light and of course being the observing friend in this episode. A big thanks to him.

Apparently a lot of room to improve. I'd deeply appreciate your honest thoughts and suggestions.

You can also find me at www.jennyzhu.com where I share my observations and reflections of the vibrant Chinese culture and society.

Cheers!

In this episode:

1. Dancing in the park

2. Potato chips---the family glue

3. Journey to West: a Chinese animation from 50 years ago

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for the nice anime. I can't believe that it was made fifty years ago in China, when the country was probably in the era of Great Leap Forward! It seems to me that the anime 西游记 is much more quality and amusing than a modern Chinese anime 铁道游击队!

Jenny, thanks for sharing that with us.  It was also great to see Aric again.  We miss him so much.  One of my Chinese friends lives in Shenzhen and she is always inviting me to come and dance in the park.  It is not only entertainment to her.  She feels that is is good for her physical health as well as her mental well being.  As you said in your film, she is in her fifties and it is a great opportunity to socialize with others her age.  The dancing works on many levels and costs nothing to participate.  I'm looking forward to your next report.  You and Aric always made a great team!

Great stuff, Jenny!

Could you write the Chinese titel of the animation here in the comments? I'm sure it can be found on Tudou and I would love to see it all.

西游记 seems to be the name of the Anime, which appears to be based on a classic novel by the same name. "Journey to the West" or "Pilgrimage to the West". Every time I search for it, I also get a lot of hits on the TV show "Monkey Magic", which is (I thought) a Korean martial arts/comedy show I grew up with as a kid in Australia.

May be it's Chinese.. may be it's Japanese.. but I loved watching this show as a kid... Actually reading the credits on a youtube video, it's obviously Japanese.. but I think it's based on Chinese mythology.. Apparently it's now still popular.. popular enough to have its own MMORPG game.

I found this first part of an episode for your viewing pleasure.. or displeasure, as the case may be. :)

Hi light487.

Thank you for good old Monkey Magic. It was made in Japan between 1978 and 1980. Of course, I watched the drama every week at that time. And let me show another Japan-made 西游记.

The link leads you to the song of the classic Japanese anime “悟空の大冒険 (悟空的大冒险, The Adventure of SunWuKong, 1967). The author of this work also produced “Astro Boy” (铁腕阿童木)
