FOUR SIDED FLASH CARDS

Another user by the name of BIGKEV posted a question a few weeks ago about how to handle the problem of making flash cards that carry han zi , english, and pin yin.  I figured this one out for myself a while back and wanted to share what I came up with via DIY video.  This is  a .mov file and may need Quicktime to play. Poddies... enjoy:

Thanks for the props.  Amazing what you can do with a bit of extra time on a Friday night.  Hope everyone who uses flash cards and suffered the same restless fate pondering how to construct a "3-sided flashcard" can get some use out of this.   You really can quiz yourself easily and set the "tents" on the table and it begins to feel like a game.  The folks at the coffee shop look at me a bit strange when I have 50 of these tents set up on the table beside my Americano, but at least I'm learning something.

You can also use paper with square print and use the leftover space for character practise.

@rash I learned English with Flashcards. Sometimes I would sit in a small restaurant and place my folded cards of the table, but alas, due to the draft (the door was a bit dodgy) the were often blown away! That was 16 years ago, and the still haven't fixed the door!

Wow... professionally done. Nice job with the video, and a clever idea.

If you're on a Mac, iFlash is a great program. It allows multiple card sides (I've got traditional/ simplified/ audio/ pinyin/ English/ example sentences/ keywords), as well as audio and photo attachments. You can view the sides in any order, and of course you can have many groups/sets - with the same card in multiple groups. The decks can be huge as well - my main one has thousands of items, although it does seem to push my processor a little.

Alas, as with almost any flash card system, I find the easy part is making the flash cards - the hard part is then following up and actually studying them.

Ah, and you could use the fourth side to list words containing the character in question!

Auntie68 你过奖了! 我写的字都是很难看。还需要练习才能进步。

Also, kind of a tech question.. anyone know how to encode a Quicktime movie out of iMovie so it doesn't auto-start?  I was kind of annoyed that this didnt' give people the option to click play for themselves.

Erm, rash, don't you remember that I'm the CPOD Grumpy Auntie? I'm normally very stingy with compliments... and I didn't make an exception for you. Your Chinese is great.

Then I will wear a smile today knowing the disgruntled auntie gave me a compliment on my work and progress so far. Thanks!
