One day, earlier the Mid-autumn festival had come again. Shi Yin's family banquet had already finished, and he had another feast prepared in his study, then he walked in the moonlight to the Gourd Temple seeking Yu Cun. Yu Cun since that day he had seen the Zhen family servant girl looking back at him twice, [and knew she] certainly would be his intimate friend, as a result he was constantly thinking about [her]. Just now it was again Mid-autumn, and he could not avoid  [expressing] his yearning to the moon, as a result he composed a verse with each sentence containing five characters, saying:

The unpredictable desires of life, repeatedly increases worry.
Frowning in the time of low spirits, go out and look around a few times.Only seeing a shadow before the wind, who may be a companion under the moon.In the moonlight if having this desire, first go to the Jade Peoples Pavilion.

Yu Cun finished reciting, and because he had constantly been thinking of his life ambitions, and hardship had not met with opportunity, so [he] again scratched his head and sighed deeply to the sky, and once again recited aloud an antithetical couplet saying:

The jade in the casket demands a good price, the woman in the mirrored dressing room awaits the time to fly.

Just then Shi Yin walked over and hearing this, smiled saying: Brother Yu Cun's true ambition is not shallow. Yu Cun quickly smiled and replied: [I was] only by chance reciting some predecessor's words, who would dare to wildly boast in this way. Then Yu Cun asked: Old Sir, what desire brings you here? Shi Yin smiled saying: Tonight is the mid-autumn festival, commonly called the "Reunion Festival", thinking [that my] respected brother is living away from home in the temple, must be feeling lonely, therefore [i have] specially prepared a small meal, and request [my] brother to come to my shabby room for a drink, not knowing if [you] can accept this meager suggestion? Hearing this, Yu Cun certainly could not refuse, then smiling said: [i have] already received such generous affection, who would dare to oppose such great kindness. Having said this [he] returned with Shi Yin to his library/study.

The moment the tea was finished, already cups and plates had been set down, then of course it is not necessary to speak of that good wine and fine food. The two men sat together, at first [they] slowly poured the wine and drank, then gradually [they] began to talk very excitedly, and unconsciously the cups flew and the wine vessels were offered up. At this time in the neighborhood, in every household [could be heard] the song of flutes and strings, overhead a round bright moon, flying with splendid brightness, the two men became increasingly exuberant, their cups dry as soon as the wine arrived. By this time Yu Cun, already 7 or 8 parts tipsy, with unrestrained excitement, toward the moon expressed his yearning, saying the verse:

On the fifteenth is the time of the complete circle, fully shining upon the jade guardrail. The heavenly circle's brilliance is extolled, and the worlds ten thousand families look up with admiration.

Hi derek,

You are really a diligent guy. I'll enjoy reading both chunk 32 and 33 this afternoon. Thankfully, my boss is on business trip this week, but I've been suffering from a running nose since yesterday morning, which is the reason why I couldn't read 32 yesterday.

Hi Andy,
welcome to the group! Actually *my* own Chinese proficiency is basic at best.

Watch out for the comments of Changye because they provide the really interesting insights (and I am still waiting for derek to come back).

Feel free to actively participate also. Nothing to lose here!

:)

Hi derek,

Fortunately, the condition of my nose is very good today (not running!). And I'm reading your interpretation now, although my boss came back to the office yesterday.

Hi derek,

(a few times) sometimes means “a few, several”.
未卜
(= 还没定好, have not decided yet) 三生愿

Haha, it’s interesting to know (toad) implies the moon in Chinese. Some Chinese people believe that toads live on the moon. 蟾宫 = the moon In Japan, people say rabbits live on the moon.

先上玉人 (= 美人) It seems that 雨村先生 is crazy about the girl!
Etymology: the in means “” (meat), not the moon.
I love all these drinking-related words!
对月
(imply, connote, motaphor?)

I couldn’t think of “3×5 = 15 = full moon” at all! I’m afraid that I’m short of imagination. I’ve found a similar expression “二八少女.

and sometime imply “many, numerous”.

(5 characters × 8 lines)
Rhyme requirements : even number lines

(chou)

(7 characters × 4 lines )
Rhyme requirements : the first line and even number lines.

In this case, I think that 捧出 should be translated as “hold out 酒杯 (= 月亮)”, because 雨村’s intention was “对月寓杯”. I’m sure that beverage served in a Moon glass is definitely tasty!

Hi Changye,

These poems are really impressive, I have been told that the great Chinese poets could compose such verses spontaneously, while drunk!

Unfortunately my translations are a poor imitation. :)

Hi derek,

I agree with you. Chinese poems are very difficult to make. Besides rhyming (押韵), you have to follow very complicated rules on tone combinations (平仄). Don't ask me about 平仄, I know almost nothing about it.

Chinese poems after the 13th century have been made mainly based on a rhyme book called "平水韵" (published in 1,229 ?) that has 106 groups of rhyming characters, which is often referred to as "诗韵".

Before the 13th century, the most authentic rhyme book was "广韵" that had 206 rhyming groups, which means that evey group had fewer number of characters compared to 平水韵, so rhyming was more difficult for poets.

And that is the very reason why 平水韵 was published and it replaced 广韵 soon after its appearance. For the record, Japanese poets basically don't have to care about rhyming.

Hi Changye,

My boss does not think I am very diligent, but I am really fascinated by this great novel and read it at every opportunity.

BTW: I just learned that a full-moon has also occasionally been called
in old times.

And that there was a legend about a three-legged toad residing on the moon. More common is the notion of a rabbit on a moon - which would fit the Japanese story.

In Japan, people "believe" that a white rabbit (白兔) is pounding steamed rice into cake (年糕) on the moon.

Hi guys. After reading your Google comment I had to let you know that I found this group today while doing a Google search of the third line of the 未卜三生愿 poem! (copied from a Chinese DVD I was watching)

Thanks for all your efforts over the past few weeks. I've been scrabbling through the previous posts today to catch up and have learnt tons. Please keep up the good work. Your Chinese is way ahead of mine so I won't be able to contribute much - but may post the odd question, once I've finished the catching up and had a breather.

Thanks again

Andy

Wow, My collegue just entered two lines of the 未卜三生愿,频添一段愁 poem into Google. The searches returned 700 resp. 2000 hits, with this very page appearing on the first page.
