The original meaning of "股" is “thigh”, and it also connoted a two-forked things because of the fork-like shape of two legs, which later generated another meaning "section, part, share". This is probably the reason why they translated "share" as "股票" (gu3 piao4) in Chinese. For the record, in Korean and Japanese, it is called "株" (stock), but not "股".
