In a sense, "" is the most famous (?) character in historical Chinese phonology, since it is the first entry character in the most academically important ancient rhyme book "广韵" (guang3 yun4, 1008 A.D.). The students who learn Chinese phonology need to know how to utilize "广韵", and "东" and the page where the character appears are always taken as examples in class.
