Hi All

We're running a photo contest on ChinesePod's brand new Facebook Page, offering a six-month Premium subscription to the best photo uploaded onto the 'Fans Photos' section.

The photo can be of anything China-related but we're looking for one that sums up China best to you. This is obviously quite a subjective thing, which may mean that more than one prize will need to be offered, especially if we cannot agree on a winner in the Praxis office!

Aside from the contest, we also publish a Word of the Day on the Facebook Page, using vocabulary related to the day's lesson, so it's worth checking out for bitesize ChinesePod learning, too!

The winner of our first ChinesePod Facebook competition has been chosen!!

The below photo was selected from over 200 entries as the image that best sums up China. It was not an easy choice.

Congratulations to Vikram. He's won a 6-month Premium ChinesePod Subscription.

You can view all entries, and find out about similar competitions on ChinesePod's Facebook Page.

- Watch out for a competition relating to tomorrow's launch of The Menu Stealer...

I agree this photo really sums up modern China. I can see a made-in-China barbie (?) doll in it. Good job.

It is a great photo. But 'sums up life in modern China'? Err... well, it's all in the eye of the beholder I guess.

@Reigau, entrants were tasked with uploading a photo that best 'sums up China', rather than 'modern China'.

Retrospectively, I'd say it was probably too vague a criterion. If you take a look at the entries, they are so diverse - hardly surprising, considering the nature of China.

@Changye I also liked the Barbie, as a pertinent addition to the composition (however coincidental that may have been); a new Barbie store has just opened in Shanghai!

The way the parent is looking over the child as she studies is not an unusual sight either. In fact, talk to any hardworking Chinese schoolchild about their country, and their confidence and pride is evident almost immediately. This is definitely not something to be found often in British kids (imagine it's the same in Europe/The USA/elsewhere??). I think it says a lot about where the country is heading.

It's all very subjective, of course... Would be nice to know others' opinions!

@suxiaoya Great job organising this.

Thanks to all those who contributed. There were many, many breathtaking and amazing shots among the entrants.

The decision was super difficult, but in the end we chose this simple picture that says so much.

I'd love to use some of the submissions as wall paper if you don't mind!

nice photo! congratulations vikram.  poor barbie left in that uncomfortable position on her tummy and her legs sticking out off the ledge while the child concentrates on her book--poetic!  i was reminded of a picture taken of me, home from school and not even changing out of my uniform to show my parents what i had learned to read at school. got to go take a look at that now, and remember how wonderful that is. to learn to read.

suxiaoya, i think the children are so eloquent in their pride because teaching children 爱国 is high priority in china.

That is quite a touching photo...nice job Vikram...

你的照片很好啊!

can we get the story behind it now?? Where and when was it taken? did you ask for permission or just snap it without them knowing??

sometimes the most random unplanned pics are the best!

I tell you what;that's a pretty solid looking text book for such a young girl [what could it be?].No wonder barbie has passed out trying to read it.

Yeah, lovely photo. It's nice to see the thoughtful analysis of the judges;spot on I'd say,and meaningful choice [not just going for a pretty scenic picture].It's also comforting for us struggling foreign learners to see the slight frown and the little pointing finger of the beautiful little girl indicating a similar struggle [though we know of course who's gonna be laughing in a much shorter space of time].

恭喜 Vikram.Jiayou.
