This Getting Started feature came up in my Me section this morning.

I’ve had a brief look, and for Newbies it is very good! It covers all the areas and questions a Newbie needs. Thinking back to when I first began to learn Mandarin and visited Chinesepod in 2006, this would have been especially helpful. Since then I’ve long thought something like this has been missing.

The Getting Started section covers those areas that although very basic, can initially be a headache to an absolute beginner, things like knowing about Pinyin and tones, simplified and traditional characters.

Over the past two weeks there have been three posts posted with Tone questions, however, this feature would have covered those and I‘m sure others.

There have been quite a few new features released over the past few months, some better than others, this is one of the better ones, and in context, most informative.

I like that you can minimise and maximise the new sections. Also,I just tried changing from newbie to ellie and it automatically came up with different recommended sets one of which looks particularly useful [the tone rules set],the other 2 probably no great advantage over the sets tab under the lesson tab,or the search functions. For these higher levels I would probably just make up 2 kinds of sets. One type of set would be for lessons that was going to teach you something new and fundamental at that level like tones in this example. The other type of set might be for the easiest lessons at that new level. But themed sets like the other two I would just leave in the sets tab.
