I'm going to China in a couple of weeks and I hope to buy some good Chinese learning materials. Any books you recommend? I'm somewhere between intermediate and advanced.

Hi nickcripps

There is a pretty good series for intermediate learners called Chinese ___ Without Tears. For example, they have Grammar, Measure Words, Homonyms, etc. 汉语学习手边册丛书. Prices are about 20 RMB per book.

They are put out by the Peking University Publishing House (北京大学出版社)。

In addition to text books, I recommend taking the chance to grab some magazines or newspapers that look interesting to you. This is really the best way to learn to read Chinese. In my experience, plowing through real articles is more useful than studying texts.

Welcome to China, and have a great trip.
