Hi all,

I did a search, but wasn't able to find an explanation regarding 周岁 and 虚岁。。。is there a discussion/explanation of this on this website?

also,is there a lesson with a breakdown of all the names of different relatives on Chinesepod?

Thanks guys!

ok, so what is the difference between zhousui/xusui and normal age?  I know there are two ages in China...the one they have and the one the rest of the world uses...

what would these terms be?

many thanks!

In china peoples use zhousui(周岁) on formal occasions. When chinease people talk about someone's age, they often means the xusui(虚岁).But their are no official define about zhousui(周岁) and xusui(虚岁).In nowdays, when ladys talk about their age they often means Zhousui(周岁).

When peoples talk about the age ,It's often like this:

A:你多大了?(How old are you?)

B:14。(I'm 14 years old.)

A:周岁还是虚岁?(Zhousui or Xusui?)

B:虚岁。(I means Xusui.)

From the above,When you fill out a form in china, you must write your Zhousui(周岁) in the age cell.In other cases you can say your Zhousui and Xusui. So,nomal age maybe Zhousui or Xusui.

I try to explain zhousui /xusui in English:

From a mother get pregnatnt to the bieth of a child, it is about one year( ten months in Chinese calendar). A neonate is one year old of XUSUI and zero of ZHOUSUI. So generally, XUSUI=ZHOUSUI-1. But sometimes, we will find that someone is 17 of XUSUI and 15 of ZHOUSUI. That is because ZHOUSUI will add one up when birthday comes, but XUSUI will add one when LICHUN comes( Chinese new year is ok).

算年纪,西方人都有那个虚岁。西方的女人肯定不用周岁的观念。
