if there's no such thing as a "British Accent", then shouldn't that saying be, "the sun never sets on the English empire"?

It may be late, but it seems to me that - 

1. There's no such thing as a 'British accent'; and 

2. The sun never sets on the British empire, 

are entirely compatible statements.  

That is, there could be a singular empire, namely the British one, and that empire could be comprised of numerous accents.  

If I had an empire I would be tolerant of at least several different accents.  :-)
