What are the top places to travel to in China?

I'm partial to Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang, Shangerila. Cultural & Ethnic diversity make this a great place to call home.

Hiking in the 虎跳峡, Tiger Leaping Gorge near Lijiang is worth the trip.  Yes, it is stuffed with tourists quaffing Beer Lao, but the scenery is very beautiful and the hiking can be strenuous at times.  If you like the outdoors, though, research your own ourdoor trips near Lijiang.

What else . . . I'm sure other CPodders have some insights.

Go to 虎跳峡 in the Winter if you want to avoid the crowds. The days should be warm, with bright blue skies.. Nights are cool.

I second outdoors Ross's recommendations. I loved 虎跳峡.

Also Yangshuo (阳朔) near Guilin.

Hangzhou is nice if you want the tamer strolls around a nice lake and tea in the hills...

John - calling 西湖 a 'nice lake' is close to an insult. Brave man! Good luck next time you visit Hangzhou. :-)

I loved Jiuzhaigou (九寨溝). Winter's probably not the best time to travel there and all my friends recommended September for visiting.

Also, getting their can be quite complicated if you choose to travel the cheap way (by bus, jeep..). There's an airport nearby and flights to Jiuzhaigou leave from Xi'an and Chengdu. The airport is known for it's delays - so keep that in mind when scheduling a trip :-D
