A cry for tech support: Why can't I see pictures?

Hello smart people!

I like pictures.

But for some reason lately I cannot see pictures that people post in their comments. Most distressingly, I cannot see bodawei's sign collection. I used to be able to see them just fine. Changye has also commented that he is unable to see posted pictures. All three of us are in China, so it seems like it would not be a blocking issue... but then I have heard that servers are not evenly blocked across all China. Could it be that Flickr is blocked in parts of China, but not others? I was able to access the Flickr website, so I do not think that is the problem. I cannot see pictures on wikipedia lately either, and timing suggests it is the same problem. I have tried other browsers to no avail.

Does anyone have any insight into this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

谢谢你们!

I was emailed by orangina on how I was able to have a picture display in my post on the Shanghai Meet-up this week while the link to the pictures was to Picasa.  First, the picture I displayed was from my own website, which isn't blocked thankfully.  I was able to use Picasa through a VPN (witopia.net...$5 a month, paid in a $60 payment).  Of course the biggest problem is that even if I can see Picasa, I know those of us in China that go to the meet-ups etc. can't see it unless also using VPN.  So yes, very troublesome.  I'm going to have to find a good app for organizing pictures on my own website.  Any tips are appreciated here too!

snapfish hosts pictures, but you have to subscribe to view them. Not sure about others, but I suspect its the same setup. Flickr and Picasa seem to be the least trouble free to view, not including the vpn issues.

I can use Flickr without using a vpn so there is an unanswered question here - is it blocked in some parts of China and not others?

I just went to the Flickr website, and was able to access it... I could see a few of the pictures, but not many. So it seems like it is not blocked. Just not fully accessible. I have no idea why.

Thanks, xiaophil, for bumping this up.

This is strange - I would like to get an answer as much as you. Maybe there is an explanation that a technical person has up their sleeve, and a solution. Let's hope.

Yeh, thanks Xiaophil.
