Rendering Issues

Does anyone else find that IE 8 renders the boards a bit weirdly? I'm using it in "compatibility mode". Often, the last letter is chopped off on the right hand side of a post, or there are even words that overflow onto the grey background on the side.

I don't think that's an IE8 issue Sebire, I've been using IE8 for longer than that but have been only seeing the things you described since the threaded comments were introduced.

I've been using IE8 for about a year on multiple machines and haven't had any issues. You may want to try NOT using compatibility mode.

Compatibility mode was introduced to make IE8 act like IE6. The problem was that IE6 was not compliant with web standards but 90% of web sites were written to look best on IE. When Microsoft decided to make IE standard, it broke all these old web sites. So they introduced compatibility mode to force the "wrong" rendering.

My suspicion is that ChinesePod tries hard to be standards-compliant, given their general opposition to anything Microsoft : )

If you click on "Page" you should see a check box for Compatibility View. That will let you turn it off.

I can't switch off compatability mode because then I see boxes instead of Chinese characters, which is really annoying. I'll have to test with Firefox/Chrome portable. Damn this lack of local admin rights!

I find Firefox superior to IE anyway. The only negative I've found is the inability to stack up more than one 'go back a page'. If I want to go back 2 pages, I have to wait until the first one works before I click it again.

I quite liked Chrome portable, except for the lack of font smoothing. Unfortunately, because work seems to think I will destroy my computer if they give me access to install anything useful on it (such as Flash or Adobe Reader updates, or indeed Chinese fonts/IME), I have to use IE8 as my default browser (and that was after begging them to upgrade me from IE6).

There are also bizarre rendering issues using Safari 4 on the Mac. I end up with the scroll bar halfway up the screen and boxes flashing around all over the place before it settles down.
