May 12, 2008 at 7:55 AMwhen I was In beijing, it seemed that every other day we were feeling slight tremors- just a kind of "dizzy" sensation every so often. I really thought it was just me loosing my sense of balance at first, but it was way too consistent to but just a bunch of coincidences- Plus my brother felt them as well at the same times as me.

May 12, 2008 at 7:45 AMChillosk, Your sentences concerning 鞋 have some very subtle differences there. 你应该买新的鞋 You ought to buy new shoes. (WHAT MAY BE IMPLIED: "...Because your shoes are trash"). So the complete thought might be 因为你的鞋子已经象垃圾了，所以你应该买新的。 你只有买新的鞋 I guess you'll just have to buy new shoes. (WHAT MAY BE IMPLIED: "Even though you've been trying to avoid it....") The complete thought might be 虽然你不要买新的鞋，可是你只有买。 ｛this last sentence sounds funny to me- can someone confirm its correctness? Thanks} 我的鞋子现在真的象垃圾。其实，我想带垃圾可能比带我的鞋子好。 虽然我没有钱，可是我只有买就可以舒服一下。

May 11, 2008 at 7:04 PMChillosk, If I may, 只要 roughly means "as long as", "so long as", and is often paired with 就. 你只要好好学习，就可以。 “as long as you study well, you'll be fine" 她只要一直走，就会到我的家。 "so long as she keeps going straight, she'll get arrive at my house" (an example from a Princeton Textbook)- "其实，只要你能“中国花”一点儿，就能顺利的根中国人做生意了“ "actually, if you could make yourself a little more "Chinese", then you could do business with Chinese people more smoothly" 只有 can mean "only". 只有这样的人可以这么说。 （only this kinda person could say such things/ talk like this) It can also mean "Will just have to" 你只有写功课，要不然你不会考好试 "You will just have to do you homework, or else you won't do good on your test" (an example from a Princeton Textbook)- "我看， 你只有骑自行车了” "I guess you'll just have to ride a bike" 只要我有不懂的次，就只有多学习，少晚儿！ Hope this helps

April 22, 2008 at 9:55 PMjhklhjk, From my understanding, WAAAAY back when, the recorded language of china was primarily one character per "word". Thus the nuance of 成语 which express so much in so small a space. So 桌 (zhuo1) may have been sufficient to connote "table" at one point (again, this is just the recorded language). Nowadays, Chinese is spoken mostly as "bi-character", if you will. It is imperative to add a "子" to most nouns so as to preserve this. The 子 doesn't retain its own traditional meaning- it just "balances the word", if you will. BUT... When a word containing a 子 is added to another word, the 子 is no longer necessary to make the word di/multisyllabic, so it is ousted. E.G. 桌子 ————》 书桌 脑子————》 大脑 电脑 法子————》办法 虫子————》益虫 毛毛虫 Does this help?

May 15, 2008 at 12:15 AMWell.... really off topic, but I didn't know buddha had a confirmed birthday. I mean, his words weren't even recorded for 400 years or so. Coincidence, Sign from God, or Alien invasion- one way or another, a lot of people lost their lives, and I'm really sorry for them to have been thus taken without warning. Politics and natural disasters just don't seem to be related- and I feel that a lot of people just look for reasons to doubt Beijing's capabilities to host the Olympics. I know that goes on in my high school- It's shameful
