March 10, 2008 at 9:59 AMAuntie68, It just occurred to me that I was misinterpreting the meaning of Nicolas' sentence, which was why I chose to use 对和不对。(I he was trying to say "True and false are fine as long as you answer"). It just hit me what was actually going on when I heard the ChinesePodFix example sentences. Probably should have listened before throwing in my two cents. Sorry guys!!

March 10, 2008 at 3:18 AMyeah, I work at an acupuncture clinic, and the other day we had our first Chinese client. I was so happy. So when we started talking about language, she was telling me how she knew her English would never be 百分之百. I realized that, unfortunately, I have to say the same about my Chinese. It's discouraging, it really is, but it seems like the level of "native speaker" is always two 寸 beyond reach. My Chinese friend was explaining to me the other day "I think we just think differently". Thats really the heart of the fascination, though, how much one has to dive into the culture of China to understand the language, whereas most other languages don't require much more than memorization of vocab, idioms, and grammar structures.

March 10, 2008 at 3:13 AMhm... like 对不对都可以? I suppose... The reasoning behind my choice of “对和不对” was based on a sentence I read a while ago, namely "用和不用什么的标准只是实用“. I figured that when using a positive-negative combo, I could just say "verb和不verb什么什么样的结果。。。“ does that strike a chord or...?

March 10, 2008 at 2:53 AMauntie68, What they told us at Chinese Academy was that 或者 is used for statements while 还是 is used for questions. To tell you the truth, in my many moons of studying I haven't encountered any trouble with inclusive/exclusive stuff. Whenever I hear an open ended choice, it is usually a general question, like 你喜欢什么颜色？ But it could just be that since I'm American, I have no qualms about interjecting "I like C!" when being asked an A or B. question. Maybe you've got something there about inclusive/exclusiveness

March 9, 2008 at 8:49 PMThis explanation is also compliments the 一。。。就。。。 pattern very well, because the 就 implies an "if" before the 一。 比如说： For example: 我一看她就想给她踢。 "As soon as see her I want to kick her" This could also be fully expanded to mean "When (AKA as soon as) I see her, I want to kick her" The "when/as soon as" is a type of conditional, which is emphasized by the 就。
