But I have to point out something wrong there:) First of all, 亚, 欧, 非, 美 are all just mimics of the partial syllables of "A"sia, "Euro"pe, A"fri"ca, and A"me"rica >欧洲 ou1zhou1 - Europe - "vomit continent" .... vomit = 呕, not 欧, 欧 simply mimics the sound of "Euro". >非洲 fei1zhou1 - Africa - "evils continent" ... 非=not (non-) Just FYI.

There has not been anything interesting in the Anime, probably because no interesting scripts were available there. I doubt that censorship is the very reason; the educational system, the economic reliance on low-level manufacturing, and the lack of financially rewarding career opportunity for screenplay writers are probably the true culprits. You can know more about this from 石康's blog (the writer for the popular TV drama <奋斗>) http://blog.sina.com.cn/shikang. He has taken his time to write about the screenplay circle in China. March 14, 2008 at 6:22 AMchangye ..I agree with you. One thing is that the commercial Japanese Anime has formed a fairly sophisticated genre tree. So the discussion of quality has been effectively confined within the sub-genres. An example would be the socalled Harem genre, which is filled with nonsense quasi-erotic jokes, but people can choose to buy or avoid them by the tag "Harem". The Chinese visual/audio arts are not yet fully commercialized and far from having a robust taxonomy. But I think as the domestic public appetite is being developed by all kinds of foreign imports (either legal or not), and at the same time the national policy tuned to be in favor of the domestic art products, a similar sophistication will come eventually. I just wish the Chinese "technicians" could have the same dedication as their Japanese counterparts.

February 12, 2008 at 4:58 PMchangye Thanks. I see what you mean. It probably represents the subtle stop following the short burst of the "ho" sound. I know it's hard to indicate this with English characters. BTW, I think lots of Japanese 音读 of these category of Kanji seem to give a clear "stop-sign" using consonants. I don't know if that's a reasonable guess or not.

That was an interesting observation that you made.
I think the point that when the cardinal/ordinal difference has to be made. We Chinese reuse the numerical system, yet by giving it a modification with the "Di" rather than making new words (first, second...), morphing the same counting system from cardinal to ordinal. Given that the difference has to be made in all languages, this is an efficient solution.
A lot of similar reusability strategies exist in Madarin at different layers, most notablly the fact that we don't use verb conjugation at all for expressing tense but use other global ways such as the "了le0" for past tense.
Hope this makes sense.
