Posted on: Studying Japanese
June 24, 2007 at 11:13 AMI'm not yet at this level, but the topic heading looked interesting. I studied to newbie/elementary level Japanese a while ago, but I want to ask; how are Chinese people studying Japanese treated or perceived when they tell others of their Japanese studies? I mean, do people 'snub' them because they are positive towards Japan? I would expect that many young Chinese people accept Japanese people more than their elders, but just how much negativity it there amongst Chinese people towards the Japanese? I feel that there are those out there who still think that the Japanese are an evil people. Regards, Lee.

June 24, 2007 at 5:12 PMbemo, I don't think people would be annoyed at all; however, other English/British people might think your trying to show off. If speaking to people in London is your only opportunity to practise the language, then have a go. Maybe letting them know you're studying first might be enough for them to offer you an open minded approach. The only way to become confident in a new language is by using it. Maybe you can join a group who have an interest in Chinese and Japanese language and practise with them to gain confidence. You might get some form of peer correction before trying it out. Be aware that if you suddenly come out with Chinese or Japanese, they might not be listening for it; you may be asked to repeat. Best of luck, Lee.
