I've found that I can't generalize taxi drivers any more than I could generalize police officers or any other occupation. You get good and bad in about equal measure. I've frequented both the 'legit' cabbies and the 'free-lancers' and haven't seen much difference overall. I do know that when I find a good one, ie, knows where to take me for the things I'm looking for, I take a little extra time to dig for information on the area and then tip him well for it.
