And incidentally you just framed it's main thought: why China hasn't developed MODERN science (in mathematically-empirical sense). 真可惜，我已经差不多多忘记了！哦哟！我的记忆力对这种科技性的问题实在太差了。真抱歉，不能给你做个更详细的介绍。。。 ：（

October 16, 2007 at 3:01 PMabout chinese science and technology (in reply to changye's post and sputnik's comment): I used to have a similar opinion, but last year I read a book on the subject, which has slightly changed my mind, so I'd like to recommend it here. It was called 'The grand titration: science and society in east and west' and was written by Joseph Needham (published first by Allen & Unwin in 1969) - maybe it's even the same book Sputnik has mentioned. Basically the author states that saying the Chinese have had no science is a GREAAAAT overstatement, and he gives lots of examples for his thesis. One ends up with the impression that almost everything we Westerners prided ourselves for inventing had been invented or started earlier by the CHinese... Strange feeling :D Unfortunately it was too specific and detailed for me to understand everything, so I won't go into details here, but it's a book worth reading for anyone interested in the subject. It's certainly eye opening to see it from such a perspective...

October 12, 2007 at 9:21 AMoh, yes, the eternal ambiguity of the Chinese characters: takes a lot of toil and sweat to get them, but then: what a satisfaction! :D Can anyone here honestly say they weren't proud of themselves when they were finally able to read them? (Well, maybe except for Changye, who is Japanese and thus had crammed them in his childhood :)
pulosm: you're right, but for me this contrast is particularly pronounced in Chinese

October 12, 2007 at 8:34 AMRich, this id the first time I see a Western- language equivalent of those Chinese riddles: a brilliant way to remember the characters, thanks a lot! Henning and Marcosbento, about 'spelunke': Polish 'spelunka' has exactly the same meaning :D (probably derived from the German) about mark's question: the structure 。。。之所以（做什么），是因为。。。 means more or less '(someone's) doing (something) is because of ........'. Am I right? So would these examples be correct? 我之所以去中国，是因为对中国文化感兴趣。 他之所以住院了，是因为假期的时候得了很严重的疾病了。 我们之所以必须开个会，是因为需要讨论一下最近的情况。 are these ok? (and are the 'le' in the second sentence correct?:D)
