Hi Anzel, good to hear you've started Chinese. There are so many opportunities nowadays to actually go to China and improve your Chinese, even as a young person. I'm sure you will love it ! Wish you much success and lots of fun.

sorry, only just read this. did you have any particular reason for putting the English term in the first (or rather second) column? I mean the order left to right of: English, pinyin, Chinese character. I automatically put the character in the first column then pinyin, then English. Just curious. I wonder if it's the way one's brain works, what do you think ?

If anyone wants my system, just ask! yes please! can you explain it, please.

I started a notebook with single words and another with phrases or chunks - also the ones I myself wanted to learn/use since they seem to stick much better. I didn't follow it up diligently enough but it was a good start. Hope to have more time in a year or so to be able to learn in a more structured manner. But this intrigues me, fits my learning style and I would be grateful for details. Also on how you remember the tones. That is still a big problem for me and more hit and miss (more miss really). With colours ? Thanks

That's interesting weibwo. I agree that 3 to 1 sounds most strange. And funnily enough, our group of 3 learning Chinese in Germany with a private teacher all ALWAYS get xia xing qi and shang xing qi mixed up. We even undermine statistics which would, I presume, say that you should at least have a 50% chance of getting it right.

Good idea(s) simonpettersson !! Like the odd videos chinespod used to do. I too get much more out of the visual dimension in addition to audio. Seems to cement it in. So please chinespod, do more of this !!! Possibly also on topics already covered in lessons. Or someone commenting in Chinese on a video, telling us what they're seeing etc.

Is it still like that Jenny ? I sort of thought it was going out of "fashion" more recently. I remember when I was first in Shanghai in 2000, it was VERY fashionable ! And people tended to strut around indicating "just look at my new pyjamas"!. I stayed at a colleagues flat in Huaihai Lu, near Huaihai Gongyuan and there's a big hospital there. The patients also walked around the area with their relatives in their pyjamas which were blue and white striped which looked much as if they were jailbirds. Mind you, as a I say, in recent years I thought it had gone out quite a bit.
