Thanks podster, is this correct?

---------------------------------------------

One Hundred Thousand [100,000] = 十万

1 Million [1,000,000] = 一百万

1 Billion [1,000,000,000] = 十亿

1 Trillion [1,000,000,000,000] = 一百亿

十万 One Hundred Thousand [100,000]

一百万 1 Million [1,000,000]

千万 = 1 Billion [1,000,000,000]

十亿 = 1 Trillion [1,000,000,000,000]

forget millard and billard!

Population of China 十四亿 (14 billion)

Interesting Question. Is China on  short scale or long scale?

*All English speaking countries now use the short scale.

(The UK changed to the short scale in 1974.)

(Some non-English speaking countries [Brazil, Bulgaria, Estonia, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Myanmar, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Wales] call the 9 zero number a billion (or sometimes a milliard) and the 12 zero number a trillion. Greece also uses the short scale, but with different names.)

--- Long Scale ---

In the 'long scale' a billion is a million million, with 12 zeros (1 x 1012):

million 1,000,000 (6 zeros)

billion 1,000,000,000,000 (12 zeros)

trillion 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (18 zeros)

*Most non-English speaking countries use the long scale.

(Some countries like Canada, Puerto Rico and South Africa use both, depending on whether English is being spoken or not.

"Some countries (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, China, Japan, North and South Korea) have their own names and systems of numbering.) Researchers need to be careful with numbers greater than one million in English historical documents, and in numbers from countries other than their own..

I have seen this once turn into a real bill fight in Hong Kong! "my money is no good, hum?' 'you make me loose face' "You think I have no money" 'your not the only successful person here' about 6 tables had ring side tickets!

You could say: "I wouldn't take that money, its FAKE!"

Well that would not go down well, but its as guolan said, best thing is to be ready. When this fails 2 or 3 times and scales tilt too far as guolan said works but can loose them face, so i do this;

Excuse myself early in the meal and ask her to make sure the bill comes to me.

yep! you can also pay someone in a photocopy shop about 20 kuai in China to type up your class text book as a word doc, then print it as a pdf file and email it to your kindle. So you can always have your heavy Chinese text book with you for a quick recap! You see, a nice tool for Chinese as well!
