November 16, 2008, 05:05 AMI just returned to the US after traveling 30 days in South China. In Haikou, I took a taxi to the hotel and the driver gave me a RMB $50 bill for change. I tried to pay for things three times at three different shops and restaurants with the $50 bill and every time the clerk would look at the bill and say it was fake. I compared the bill to a real $50 bill and cannot tell the difference per the references above. Now I will ask for $20 bills for change rather than taking a $50 bill.
