HI everybody

I'm french and my name is Evelyn, so In China my given name is AI FEI LIn 哎非 林,but I know that Fei is not really good. Can I change it for what?

Then I have a chinese grand' daughter: In France she is Lou Ann, what good character can she have for that name? that does not mean anything in French like in China.. She also has

this one in Chinese meaning Autum festival 秋  ?(can't find the other character)

Thank you for giving her( and me) good characters and meaning!

Hi everybody! I visited Yunnan last month, then stayed in Shanghai for 3 weeks. In Yunnan our van did not have any belt and the driver drived so crazy on mountain road etc..  then in Shanghai all the  taxi drivers told me :"no need to wear your seatbelt". But I did it, furthermore (as you know) they drive so dangerously there and at full speed between  the other cars, buses, cyclists, pedestrians (not even looking at the traffic lights),rushing and crossing from everywhere! A miracle we did not hit nor kill someone or ourselves!   I've already been  3 times to China, but I see  unfortunatly they are not improving. It's even worse. I do not understand why the police which is omnipresent does not make obey the law. As for the fines for spitting in the streets (or elsewhere) they do not seem very useful. There are plenty of doctors and eminent professors,  intelligent people, then central government and others  are powerful, how can they  all let such things happen? I wonder  why nobody cares? except some volunteers? is it so difficult to be logic and aware of danger? It's a pity because as many people i'm so fond of China, but as long as this will not improve I could not stay living there , I will never cycle there  and (alas)I will never come with my little grand'daugher who is a Chinese sweet child, because I dont want she can have more opportunities to be injured and ill.

To Timlarson,

Yes, me too, I  have understanding problem, thought I knew  almost all the words of this lesson and others...when Chinese people speak as in real  life.  So easy after a while when the explanations come and when every word is said slowly. I think there is a real gap! and  also the accents are so different. Sometimes some words are swallowed, others are not finished to pronounce, or "ai" is "ei" etc... For me English and Spanish were far much easier (I'm French). However I think all languages are less difficult to understand when we see them written, even in hanzi!!

According to the features of the chinese thick "blancket"  described in this lesson it is what we call in France "une COUETTE" and that we translate into English as a "DUVET". Duvet is a French word still in use but does not mean the same in France as in English.  In France it  is a bag you use when you sleep outside or in a camping and in English DUVET means Couette. Couette is what you put onto your bed and can be filled with miscellaneous components as the "thick blanket "of the lesson.

I think that for English : Duvet is the right word and for French, Couette is the right word

dogupatree,

I have always the same problem as you...(indeed i'm getting old!!...) and sometimes I hear different things and I can't pick the word if I don't see it written... After reading and listening again and again I suceed in recognizing the word and finally I agree that it may exist diffferent accents and that my brains take a long time to adapt...

I also think it's because I'm not get used to..

All the same it's difficult for me..  Evelyne from France
