Lesson intro text - China is actually only the 4th largest country in the world, no?

Population wise, definitely number one.

Couldn't the new dashboard have been introduced without using the new confusing techno term dashboard? Basically you're changing the look of the home page and adding more stuff to it to make it less useless. So, it is still the Home page, but also now called Dashboard - are two names for this necessary? Am I missing something here? And you're doing some more filtering based on groups.

is this a known bug that non-subscribers (as me) can reply to lesson comments?

So is JohnB (not P) still at CPod or did he make his exit in the middle of the night? The learningonyourterms blog is a little out of date and I don't think he quite reached 5000 characters yet on his 88group.

I'm guessing CPod realized the new policy didn't make sense to display at the bottom of non-lesson conversation pages. Having different versions of carefully crafted policies for each different conversation area may confuse those who like to read the fine print at the bottom of every web page. Also the technological challenges of having custom policies for each conversational area may result in the need for several weeks of programming changes and beta testing. Thus the need to link to a separate policy page, which is definitely the first thing any law-abiding user will click on and thoroughly read through before posting.

"we are adding a policy page that will be linked to from where the existing policy is situated"

Isn't this getting a little complicated?

Mynash*,

No need to waste an email address to create a fake account, my clever friend. You can post in any Newbie lesson with any of your numerous fake and expired accounts, assuming they haven't been banned by CPod.

Looking forward to meeting your next secret identity on-line. Keep in touch.

I see your reasoning, but disagree that these measures will have the intended effect. There has to be better ways of bringing lurkers out than restricting the flow of conversation and having people link to their posts in other sections of the site.

Henning's idea above makes sense. Solve the problem using interface/back-end design, not by trying to control the natural responses people wish to express and post.

Personally I don't even read most of the language-specific posts. I find the cultural posts, debates, and other discussions the most interesting. It's the people that complain about the drivel that I find irritating.

RJ,

From web.archive.org.. Nov. 16, 2006, Chinesepod poll was as follows:

Do you like variety in the podcast publication schedule, or would you rather have certain levels published on fixed days?

... this determined the random publication schedule for the following 2.5 years? ack.
Anyways, even if the poll came out 50/50, the 50% who said they like to be surprised probably didn't give a tinker's dam in the first place.
