Hello Mike, Jenny, Vera. Did a few media lessons recently, time to add Advanced to the mix. Cheers from sunny Paris, France.

same w iPhone apparently (also purchased specifically for Pleco as all devices before). Nice app, would b nice to have a little more control from the smartphone rather than go to the full site each time.

hehe, no I didn't give up Chinese, still reading news and listening to podcasts every day. I'm not learning Japanese, I just don't want to fell completely illiterate, want to be able to look up words in a dict. And I haven't given up on WM either, I just test stuff with this iPhone emulator. My mobile phone has twice the iPhone screen res, and I couldn't do w/o Pleco anyway, so why bother?

haven't been around this community much for the past 6 months - amongst other things, I am preparing for 2 weeks vacations in Japan early November.

This includes learning hiragana / katakana (平假名 / 片假名), for which I developed a mobile learning tool for myself with :

  • Dynamic hiragana, katakana and romaji charts
  • Identification based on kana stroke order
  • Conversion kana to romaji, hiragana <-> katakana

nobody seems to have picked up on the following typo in the transcript :

那金庸一点儿也不平庸啊。算了算了,那你说叫什么好吧?
[Marital arts novelist] Jin Yong isn’t mediocre at all...

I was wondering if the typo was intentional ?

Out of 148 phonetic components, here's a list of the 36 that do have a single pinyin transcription, tone excluded (at least across most frequent modern usage) :

you may want to check my table of phonetic components. it's far from complete, 148 for a total of over 800, but it gives you an idea.

It allows you to sort by predicatability, just select list by scattering. It's also possible to sort by sound, recognizing some of the pinyin 'inconsistencies', e.g. the 'i' in chi/si/shi being pronounced differently from the 'i' in li/pi/qi.

a bit of self-promotion for a change :-)
