Unfortunately,  :)  , I will make great use of this lesson. I teach English to first through fifth grade Chinese students. Most of them have been studying with me for three years straight. The older students LOVE it when I teach them the English phrase for the verb tense or grammar pattern that we are learning. They actually perk up with excitement when I can tell them how to refer to a complex verb tense in English!  And, of course, I can only do that if I know how to say that exact tense in Chinese, since they can't guess my meaning when it comes to these descriptive grammar terms. So, on behalf of my enthusiastic students, I thank you for this lesson.

Myself? I still think it's easier to learn grammar naturally (without learning the grammar terminology) for students in elementary school! But, they have to learn it in school eventually, to pass the exams, and, hey, who am I to argue against teaching them something that makes them perk up with excitement, right?!  :)

I found that if I click directly on "Lesson PDF" I have the same problem, but if I click instead on the portion in parenthesis "(text version)", I don't have the problem. Strange. This doesn't happen for only this lesson...it happens anytime I've opened a lesson's PDF lately.

Hmm. I don't know. I assumed it's right only because no one's ever corrected me before. :)

Anybody out there able to say?

I should have used English to post my first two sentences!

What I meant to say was this: I pasted and copied the sentences in your essay to this thread, read them, then (deliberately) deleted them before posting my comment, all because I didn't know the exact meaning of the word 除外, and needed perapera to read it. (Perapera can't be used in a Word document off-line; by temporarily copying the sentences to this thread, I could use Perapera to read them, then delete them before actually posting my comment.)

There's no actual problem...I just found it funny (in a self-deprecating way) that I had to go to all that trouble simply because I couldn't guess the meaning of one tiny, seemingly insignificant word!

bababardwan, 我是把你写的文章的句子复印、贴在这里上、把它们读起来了、又把它们删除了,你知道为什么吗?都是因为我自身看不懂“除外”这个词具体是什么意思,需要靠perapera才能明白!今天我学到了这个生词,每天学到一个生词就行了,所以今天已经算成功了,现在我就可以去休息! :)

反正,你的task太有意思了,那个玩儿paintball的男孩儿太可怜了,我永远不会去玩儿这个体育!

I'm still confused by this point. All of lujiaojie's examples are situations where, as you say, one could say "I'm afraid...". But, the original sentence from the text could not be translated, "I'm afraid that it's then sometimes easy to break the ice".

I thought 恐怕 was different from 可能 - I thought the former was used in only bad situations (as lujiaojie's examples bear out) and that the latter could be used in either a good or bad situation.

But, the original sentence from the text leaves me confused. Can I get further clarification on this? In what other good situations could 恐怕 be used?

I'm a little surprised/frightened by how little of the cooking vocabulary I understood on first listen! Yikes! Apparently, I've neglected increasing my cooking vocabulary just as much as I've neglected increasing my cooking skills!
