Extremely useful dialogue. Very practical and applicable.

Agree.

If cpod keep going in this direction, I would consider coming back on a full subscription. Native speakers at this level and above should be a no brainer.

However, cpod would need to add a "native" level (or seriously rethink "media"), to really temp me. [By "native" -I mean a level where there is natural, native content, with nothing pre-scripted, just native conversation, with a transcript provided after.]

"Media lessons are supposed to be aimed at cultivating advanced listening fluency (which requires being weaned off transcripts)."

Not sure if you are just trolling this thread?

So many things wrong with this statement.

1- There are 100s of free websites I can get news from. I don't need to pay a premium subscription for this privilege. Regardless, cpod's media lessons are two weeks out of date by the time they are published, and are often useless 6 months after they publish because of broken links.

2- It is always better to have the audio and transcript.

If you want to test yourself don't read the transcript. If you want fast, efficient learning - then reading and listening is better than slowly guessing at words. If you want inefficient learning - then you too can also have the option not to look at the transcript.

"it may be that CPod has copyright concerns about providing their own transcripts?"

But they have no concerns about copying the audio?

"it is inevitable that links will eventually be broken. This just means that they are timely and topical"

Your arguments make no sense. timely? All cpod media lessons are 1-2 weeks out of date, by the time they are published. This lesson being a classic example. I read and listened to this news report the day it came out. Without having to pay a premium sub.

If you want to setup a media program, this is my best advice:

-get a broad variety of content

-focus on listening and reading to transcripted content

-if you want to test yourself focus on listening without the reading

Mark, 1+1 transcripts normally get uploaded a few weeks after screening. Main index here: http://cctv.cntv.cn/lm/xinwenyijiayi/video/index.shtml. This video page here: http://news.cntv.cn/2014/06/20/VIDE1403274245711861.shtml. Transcript should appear at this link in a week or so.

I'm not sure why cpod persist with media lessons. Most of the links to the old media lessons are all broken. Regardless, I can set up a media learning program, with transcripts, much easier than waiting for a random bi-monthly cpod media update (with no transcript).

No doubt cpod will say transcripts are spoon feeding...but this attitude has no real understanding of the benefits of both reading and listening - to content.

You'd have to ask tencent, directly, why they use these terms, if you really wanted the history/thinking behind it. I've always thought that both "friend circle" and "moments" are both pretty strange nomenclature for what is, essentially, a network spamming/bragging function.

Hi jenniferchoo - I made a list over at lingq of native mandarin content with transcripts. You may need to register to see the forum, but free regardless.

http://www.lingq.com/forum/6/23662/?page=1#post-165797

If anyone has other transcripts, that they want to share, feel free to let me know.

I also see that popup users are posting transcripts of the advanced chats that Echo hosts over there as well. This is brilliant for learning, as the popup advanced lessons are just free flowing chats - not like the discussions of canned content/vocab that happens at cpod.

Lessons could be learned by cpod, but they have demonstrated they aren't changing their ways any time soon...unfortunately.

mark, I made I list of bite of china transcripts a while back. wenku baidu have them as well - for example here:

http://wenku.baidu.com/view/b635a6da84254b35eefd3442.html

Agree with the sentiment that the media lessons are a waste land... Broken links for many of the old lessons.

Cpod would be much better off having a "native" level - where they have a regular conversation for 5-10 minutes, amongst native speakers, and transcript it. Much better and probably easier?

I've made this point a million times, so better of not harping on it?... These days, I spend most of my time at other Chinese learning sites, mainly becuase cpod doesn't offer any native natural content with a transcript (at all - anywhere on the site). You either get pre-transcripted canned dialogues or no transcripts for the advanced and media general dialogues/chats.

Hi, as Oliver mentioned (two and a half years ago).

The link doesn't work.

What is the point of doing media lessons if the links don't work?

Hi, I can' make the link work.

I have raised this point many times with media lessons.

What is the point of having mdeia lessons if the links don't work for them?
