August 12, 2008, 01:38 PMIn English anti-perspirant is usually considered a subset of deodorant. So somethimes you say deodorant, but mean anti-perspirant. Is it the same in Chinese?
Also what's the word for solid anti-perspirant? Does止汗剂cover that?
Somebody one recommended using yogurt in your pits instead of deodorant. Claimed the bacteria in the yogurt ate up whatever was causing the smell. I didn't try it.

June 17, 2008, 03:07 PMI started learning Chinese in Beijing and developed the northern accent. When I moved to Taiwan it was quite difficult to understand their accent since it was two extremes as far as the erhua went. Over the course of seven years there I got used to it and developed a middle ground relatively standard accent. (Taiwanese people on the street would always say "你说得好标准!"）
I found that in Beijing it was primarily the people on the street that spoke with a heavy erhua, and in Taiwan it was the same kind of people who dropped it completely. So as in any language, it's the extremes that wouild label you as a hick or low class, no matter what particular accent it is. My very Taiwanese wife, for example, speaks with a only a slight Taiwanese accent.
I don't understand the people above who say that Taiwanese don't use "han" for 和。(when used as "and") I never heard anything but. Now that I've been listening to ChinesePod I'm getting used to "he" again, but "han" is still what I say by default.

April 19, 2007, 02:19 PMStephane, About a year ago when I first signed on for a trial period, ChinesePod was also updating their website and not only were there some problems, but the site was down for a few days. I contacted them about this and they extended my trial period. Customer service here is amazing. Be assured that any complaint you have is taken into consideration. Speaking of which, I second Tanmei's complaint about ditching the Traditional characters. I understand the emphasis for Simplified since that is what China uses and I make every effort to learn both, but Traditional is not going away any time soon. Let's hope it never does.
