Elijah, I've sent you an email, by the way. Have a great one!

Hi Elijah, would you happen to have a recording of your public speaking by any chance? I'd love to hear it!

I understand 声调 is super important but listening to conversations like this is when I personally wonder if tones are always pronounced the way they are written in textbooks or dictionaries. In the dialogue, when the woman says "踩死你!踩死你!", tone-wise, it sounds nothing like "cǎi sǐ nǐ" -- it's like the tones are completely ignored. lolI recently had a similar observation recently when eavesdropping two native speakers. It was a short exchange between an overweight son and his mother talking... The son opened up the fridge and then the kitchen cabinet and sighed "唉哟,什么都没有耶。" (he was, of course, looking for snacks, junk food...) and his concerned mother shouted "吃苹果!", pointing at an apple on the counter and let me tell you, it was not "chī píng guǒ" --it sounded more like "chì pìng guò!"... Maybe because she was shouting? I'm not sure.*sigh*:) <--- Me, still trying to think positively.

Hi, I had a question about the word 能. In the conversation the man asks the therapist "哦,足疗还能治胃不好啊?" and she says to him "能啊,我们有个顾客有胃病好多年了,做了半年足疗就好了。" but I thought questions containing 能 cannot be answered with 能? You have to say 可以. Tell me if I'm wrong because I was taught, for example, if someone asks you "你能不能借给我一支笔?" and you wanted to say "yes", you couldn't say 能 as your answer, it has to be 可以啊. Please clarify this for me. Thank you!

I know this lesson was from a long long time ago but is it just me or does the male speaker in the dialogue say 快看儿 where there shouldn't be an 儿化音? Thanks.

How common are tattoos in Taiwan among young people nowadays? I've heard that in neighboring Japan, tattoos are still stigmatized...

*Question: Even though the couple in the conversation is ordering coffee (drinks), do baristas in China still ask "两位是在这边吃还是带走"? Could they replace the verb 吃 with 喝? Thank you.

I see. I prefer Standard Putonghua accent than Guoyu accent but I prefer traditional characters over simplified. I would lose my s*it (excuse my language) and possibly even become very violent if someone tried to pull a fast one on me like that. I guess I'll just go to Taipei to study Mandarin. Plus, Taiwanese people are honest and friendly. And I like your 珍珠奶茶.

Do the locals ever fall for scams like these? Are these scams really common in Taiwan, too?
