For it all started in college when I took an "Intro to Chinese Religions" class (I was a religion major). I fell in love with chinese philosophy (特别 Zhuangzi) and decided to study abroad in Fuzhou.
Now I really want to improve my chinese so I can hopefully move to Shanghai someday. 我爱上海!

Someday I hope to have my own qipao dress. Sadly I didn't get one made for me when I was living in China, but I plan on getting one when I (hopefully) move to Shanghai.

October 15, 2008, 05:28 PMMy first chinese name was 欧雅琪. It was picked out by one of the chinese exchange students at my college before I left for my study aboard year in 福州. I never really liked it & decided to change it after people kept telling me it was "really cute." Telling me that something is cute makes me want to run for the hills.
This last March I was visiting my taiwanese friend, 妙妙, living in 上海. I asked her to help me create a new chinse name that resembled my own a little bit more (& was in no way "cute"). The family name I didn't change since I think 欧 is pretty good for O'Sullivan. She helped me pick out 柔安.

August 29, 2008, 08:56 PMGreat lesson. I was always amused how persistant the shopattendents were that they could find a shoe that would fit me. I'm 5'7 and wear a women 10 US (thats like a 42 I think in European size?). Finding clothes that would fit me was nearly impossible, so I rarely even bothered with shoes. The only reason I ended up in shoe stores was I was with my (much smaller) friends. I tried my best to tell them that that I was 太大, but they still tried anyways.
However I did buy a pair of very cool red & black Converse while I was in China. So its not totally impossible, just certainly difficult.

How would someone say "Chinese take showers at night lest we contaminate the sacred clean bed" in chinese? I would love to be able to quote that in both english & chinese.

May 10, 2007, 06:30 PMWhen I was in Shanghai, I remember everyone calling them "xiaolong baozi" but in this lesson the zi is dropped. I thought I heard Ken say "baozi" a few times, but I could be wrong. So which way is correct, "bao" or "baozi" ? Anyways, great lesson! Now I'm craving xiaolongbao. Alas, there is no place that I know of in Oregon that serves them.

June 12, 2009, 06:09 PMI find my chinese surname amusing, 我姓欧. My full chinese name is 欧柔安 which I think is a pretty good approximation of my actual name, Reanne O'Sullivan.
Doubt there are many other 欧 out there that I woud run into. I wonder if many other foreigners end up with strange surnames for their chinese names.
