Correction: I meant CPod didn't go far enough.

I agree. But, you didn't go far enough. My younger daughter is now married to a Parisian (far easier kinship terminology), but her former husband and his current wife are still members of our family. Both of them are Nan2jing ren2. I've been introducing him as my qian2 nv3xu, and his wife as his tai4tai, but are there official terms for them? In addition, my older daughter is married to a woman who is, if it matters, older than my daughter. Is there a term for daughter-in-law that covers that? If not, what would be a good approximation?

A colleague, an emeritus professor at one of the best universities in the U.S. and an acknowledged world leader in his particular field, is addressing a group of Chinese full professors (or whatever the Chinese equivalent is to that American academic designation--they are close to but a trifle below his academic equals) who are visiting the university. He doesn't speak Chinese but is confident he can learn to correctly pronounce one or two sentences. (I'll be delighted if this arrogant um, person, discovers Chinese isn't like Spanish, but that's not the issue.)

So, what I need is several words, an opener that says something like honorable friends and esteemed colleagues, my colleagues and I welcome you. Thank you for setting aside time from your busy schedules to be here today.

Or something. He needs this by tomorrow evening (early Friday evening, Pacific time). Can anyone help me?????!!!!!?????!!!!!

Thanks!

I have a suggestion for learning to write hanzi: Chinesepod practice paper for the vocabulary for each lesson. I find that writing each word 50 or 100 times cements it in my brain. Especially, at least for me, since it takes so much concentration to form each stroke properly and in proportion to all the others.

You only need to design and provide the practice paper grid once, then offer it as a pdf with all of a given lesson's vocab filled in in the first column as a model. It would be nice if you could use a handwriting font so the model would relevance to our pratice words.

DoFoFu used to do this--you filled in your vocab words, then the site generated the practice paper. But, as far as I can tell, DoFoFu is defunct.

I'm adding my vote to those who want more Qing Wen, not less. I don't know whether it works for Newbies, but as a vaguely intermediate student for years, there have been many QWs that explained things I hadn't been able to get straight before. I'd enjoy seeing/hearing some study tips--I'm having a problem with motivation right now--but not at the expense of Qing Wen. Please don't cripple it.
