I'm really disappointed that ChinesePod have not done anything with Cantonese before now. I've been asking for a LONG time to have a weekly Cantonese podcast. It is ChinesePod after not and not MandarinPod. Decisions were made not to run with a Cantonese podcast for a number of reasons, and yet here we have Shanghaiese. Great to see, but please could we have less bias towards Shanghaiese and give some consideration to Cantonese for those living/visiting Hong Kong or living in Shenzhen or Guangdong.

Any plans for a meet-up in December?  I'm coming to Shanghai in late December and wondering if there's any meet-ups or even the ChinesePod classes running with Jenny that late in the month?

Jenny mentioned in the dialogue that the Chinese people consider "fate" to be important and relevant, even a wrong number call.  I know that fate is quite an important concept in Taoism but wonder whether it is significant in Chinese culture generally.  If so, can someone give some more info.

Just to say that the two guys who act in the dialogue are excellent - they always make me laugh which really helps me learn.

In relation to 同性恋, I've also heard the word "gay" being used in some Chinese films instead of 同性恋 or 同志.  I'm guessing that most people would understand the sound - I've no idea if it is written differently in pinyin, e.g. I've heard "gay bar" in the middle of a Mandarin conversation as opposed to 酒吧的同志 (I'm not doing a very good job at explaining what I mean!)

Manbags are extremely popular in the UK.  In fact, backpacks are less favoured as manbags are considered more trendy.

@rich - slight correction, we don't really use the word "waist bag" for a fanny pack, in the UK at least we mainly refer to a "waist bag" as a "bum bag".

Hi Amber,

A great lesson and lots of useful information for anyone wanting to learn characters.

Interesting also about the history of sex in China.  I never knew all that stuff about  concubines.  It was also great to hear you mention homosexuality, and attitudes towards gay people, as this is somewhat of an unspoken subject in China.

A great podcast.

A quick question which isn't so obvious to a newbie like me, but why in the conversation do they say:

nèi gè shì wǒ xiān sheng instead of adding de to make it "my" husband, i.e. nèi gè shì wǒde xiān sheng

Is there a rule to know when to add de and when to leave it out?

Thanks,

Terry
