May 16, 2011, 09:04 PMI don't think there were non-smoking rules back then, at least not in Taiyuan, or maybe people didn't know them, everyone told me it was normal. I have seen people smoking inside banks, inside the phone/ cable bill locations, but I never saw that in Shanghai. I think the best was i used to see a lot of people smoking while riding motorcycles, I am not sure how that works.

I remember when I first arrived in China, I had to go to the hospital for a health check, Inside the hospital I saw a doctor smoking 烟 (yan) while holding a baby, I was very surprised.

September 11, 2008, 11:26 PMOne culture thing that i noticed in most of the apartments that i lived in China, is that if you forget you're key you're screwed. Most of the doors that I came across require a key to get in if you locked it or not.
I have definatly done the "手机，钱包，钥匙......，哎 ...." (AS I AM WATCHING THE DOOR CLOSE)
哎呀， 没带钥匙,
肯定在桌子上 (kending zai zhuozi shang)
但是, 门开不了 (danshi men kai buliao)
我这个笨蛋 (wo zhege bendan)
It's a good idea to leave a spare key with a friend, if I didn't do that, I would have had to call the locksmith about once a month.

May 26, 2008, 08:49 AMThat si 四 （4）, shi 十 (4) thing, mentioned in the above intro, has gotten me into loud pointless arguments a number of times. I also remember last time was in 上海 meeting someone who was a proclaiming to be a "SangHaiRen" (lacking the 'h", very cute). I think these accent lessons are very useful. I remember learning so much Mandarin and then going out in ShanXi and I couldn't understand anyone. They could understand me, but I couldn't understand them for about 2 years. I suppose it would be like someone studying American English and then walking into a Scottish pub in Scotland and attempting to converse using English for the first time. Being someone who lives in the PRC (and not in Shanghai, I don't often (or actually ever) meet people who speak with the Taiwan accent, just movies and TV shows, (So, thank you. These lessons should help me understand those crazy Taiwan soaps better. I am not sure if I want to or not though.) Can anyone recommend any really good Taiwan movies or TV shows?
