I work for one of these evil companies. Even the boss of the company said "Our games are like online heroin, and we aim to hook the weak." ...
There must be something to it. People somehow play these terrible games.

I didn't read all the previous posts so forgive me if it's already been mentioned...

What about a Dear Amber about Extra-Marital sex... I think it's quite a bit more open than most Western countries. Walking to work, I don't think I can even count how many places one could go...
I was shocked when I went to a Chinese friend's house, had dinner with his family and then, when I was being driven home, was asked whether I wanted to go to the bar and 泡妞 with him. Later, I discovered many of my Chinese friends do this. Talk about culture shock. Though, as hughchina adds, it could be that there marriage is only what their parents wanted. This seems to be true for several friends that I know.

An interesting point is that many of the Chinese game companies make more money than the "Giants" of the West. Ubisoft, EA, etc. I guess high profit margins and having 1.3 billion people at the doorstep help quite a bit.

The way the guy speaks is quite clear in comparison with the mandarin you'd hear in most of the south of China. It's good practice!

Ah what a perfect word, 跳槽... What I would love to do more than anything, haha.

I agree with John, living in a 'small town' has really helped me a lot with my Chinese and jobs (other than teaching) are hard to find but exist for those willing to look for them. Though, I would have benefited greatly with some of those great job listing websites Shanghai has to offer.

Great lesson!

Ah, I'm told by a co-worker that no one would say that but thanks anyway!

I guess I'm stuck with 巫婆的巫。

One thing I don't like about my name, 巫安森, is that the only way it seems possible to explain it is saying :
我姓巫, 巫婆的巫。 (laughter always ensues)  hahaha

I've tried 巫山的巫 (三峡)but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

I loved the lesson description. I would have had a harder time writing it in such a clean fashion.

Why oh why must there be pushing when everyone already holds a ticket with an assigned seat?

Being someone who easily holds grudges, I truly wonder if it is at all known to the offenders at how much they have ruined my day/week.

Great lesson! I'll have to learn some of those so I don't sound as crude when yelling at my neighbours!

How about a lesson on "6:30am on a Saturday (or any day for that matter) is not a time to start gutting an apartment" ?

Posted on: Transliteration into Chinese and the Long Pinky Fingernail
September 27, 2008, 02:17 AM

My pet peeve is being called 安德鲁森 Anderson's bread shop (from my name, Andrew)... ... that or having my name mispronounced in English as 'Angel'... grrr...  is  /ˈændru/ so hard?
On a seperate note replying with "我不是天使” doesn't help as it  happens to be the name of a Chinese song.

I thought the long 'pinky' fingernail habit was pretty straightforward. Since nearly anyone that I have seen who has a long fingernail seems to have come from the countryside it probably relates to some kind of show of wealth; not having to work hard. Most likely originating with growing all of ones fingernails long and then shifting towards the most infrequently used. They can't change the colour of their skin to a more pale "whiter" colour so the next best thing would be an expression of not being amongst the working class. (ridiculous of course)

A question of my own:
Here, in Fujian province, another habit is to grow facial mole hairs to absurd lengths. Is that true for anywhere else? That one I can't explain...
