partygo--here are a couple more ideas for English names, using a "j" sound instead of a "ch" sound (which are very closely related linguistically in English). George (derived from a Greek word that means "farmer") Jason (derived from a Greek word that means "to heal") Joseph (often shortened to Joe, devired from the Hebrew phrase for "he will add") Given your Chinese name, I personally kind of like Joseph.

Thanks, MLowe. That is a really useful bit of information. I need to try to practice using yao more...I seem to default automatically to using xiang.

I'm a complete newbie, so sorry for the really basic question. Is there a difference between 想 xiǎng and 要 yào, or can they pretty much be used interchangeably? (我想吃油条 wǒ xiǎng chī yóutiáo as opposed to 我要吃油条 wǒ yào chī yóutiáo). I'm getting the sense that xiǎng is maybe a little softer or more polite. Is that correct?
