September 11, 2007 at 10:05 AMIn the expansion section, a couple of dialogues translate 吃不到葡萄说葡萄酸 as someone who does not know what he/she is talking about. My Chinese professor and my Shanghainese wife both agree with me that this is not correct. We all are of the impression that this expression is used to comment on someone who says bad things about something that he/she cannot have. For example, if I asked Jenny out for a date and she said no and I then told my friend, "she's not so great, who needs her?", I could rightly be accused of 吃不到葡萄说葡萄酸. Am I right?
