amber, That's pretty astute. I was imagining someone adding a sequence of numbers for someone else, but even there, the numbers are often counting something like 10块(钱), 4块... I suppose I'd probably add a long pause or a 然后 between ambiguous numbers if they were really just numbers, but I don't know what a native speaker would do.

How does one say "10, 4" instead of "14"?

I was hoping for a Chinese version of Alouette. Does one exist?

luobinzhenmei: I thought the 生 in 生姜 meant "raw" -- the way garlic is when you buy it, and that you have to specify 生 was just one of those things

antoniov: 汉语: Han Chinese language. Some prefer to use that instead of 中文 because the latter might imply that mandarin is *the* language for the whole country, which is far from the case in practice. 普通话 is usually used to distinguish proper mandarin from dialects.

amber, Thanks for the answer. I was just using "Nike" and "size 13 shoes" as a specific example to make the grammar less awkward. My question is more about 运动品牌 than about 有的卖 -- does 运动品牌 mean the companies that own the brands, or is it talking about a particular store? Like piers mentioned, one can't "have gone to" a brand. But in the audio and the explanation here, it seems that 运动品牌 is referring to the company that makes the brand. If that's so, maybe I'm confused about 我去过了.. Does that mean that he's been to a particular store that sells those brands, or that he's been to many stores that sell those brands and he's pretty sure none of the brands make large enough shoes, or is this talking about sports company owned stores, or something else? Thanks! This is great stuff!
