Such a fascinating phenomenon.

If it wasn't mentioned before, check out the January 16th New York Times article written by Jennifer Lee.  Nice background thus far about the fortune cookie, which claims it was actually created in Japan in the late 1800's, not in the U.S:

I just read the comments and didn't see that anybody posed this question: is the zhang 帐 used in the dialogue transcript on iTunes supposed to be 账？ My regular dictionary says that 帐 is a curtain or a canopy.
