December 27, 2008 at 9:08 PMAlright, there's a part in the show 9 minutes and 38seconds in, when the guest speaker says, " There was one time, ten years ago when a taxi driver..." What the heck does she say after that? I played it over and over, but I can't understand what she's saying. Can anyone interpret it?

I noticed when you were speaking Chinese that you prononced "sh" sounds as "s" sounds. Is this a Shanghai style of speaking Chinese or did you pick it up somewhere else like Taiwan?

Can we please get the Chinese characters for "san yao" (take a leak). I'm guessing this is dialect, is there an equivalant in putonghua?

December 27, 2008 at 9:39 PMYeah, Taibei drivers are usually honest, but they drive far too fast. One time I raised my arm to try to find a cab and two cab drivers nearly crashed into each other while racing over to me. I was shocked even though I was pretty much a Taibei local at the time.
Another thing about Taibei drivers is that they often chew on "beetle nuts" (檳榔）， which is the most disgusting habit I know of. The streets become stained w/ blood red spots because of the cab drivers spitting out 檳榔。
Another thing I don't like about Taibei drivers is their Mandarin Chinese is often really poor. One time I had a cab driver who honestly couldn't speak a word of Mandarin Chinese. He could only read characters and speak Taiwanese. Other drivers speak Mandarin so poorly, that communication becomes very difficult. People are often forced into misprounoncing words in the same way they do so that they can understand. This is why Taiwan isn't a good place to learn Chinese.
