May 6, 2009 at 7:30 AMI'm wondering why Chinese people seem so interested in military affairs.
In a previous lesson, the text mentioned space weapons and shooting down other countries' sattelites. Now we have this lesson. And when I go to Chinese media sources like sina.com, huanqiu shibao, and phoenix television there is tons of military related content. You rarely see that kind of stuff in the NY Times or Washington Post.

February 2, 2009 at 3:27 AMIn my opinion, there seems to be a real nationalist strain to many of these advanced lessons. I've seen stuff about building an aircraft carrier, space weapons, and China's status as the only continuous civilization in history. Obviously, one should be proud of one's country's accomplishments. But placing these things in educational materials seems a bit strange (and perhaps unprofessional) to me.

October 25, 2008 at 2:17 AMwould anyone be able to explain the difference b/w ti2sheng1 and ti2gao1? In addition if ti2sheng1 is to promote, does that mean it is interchangeable with cu4jin4? Thanks!

I'm not suggesting the statement has no historical merit--you're the one suggesting it. Like I said, my original question was one related to vocabulary and grammar, not philosophy or history. But I must say you teach very well =)

October 8, 2008 at 7:09 PMAs for the line about China being the only continuous civilization in existence, I was asking more from a vocab/grammar standpoint rather than whether it has any merit.
But now that you mention it, why throw something like that into a lesson dialogue without providing any basis or evidence? Furthermore could you not say Indian civilization (which is ancient like China) is also continuous?

October 7, 2008 at 4:09 AMI'm a little confused about the part of the dialogue which says: "wo3men zhong1hua2 wen2ming2 shi4 wei2yi1 yi1zhong3 chuan2cheng2 xia4lai de wen2ming2." Does this mean Chinese culture is the only culture that has been continuous/uninterrupted until present day?
