A very useful lesson but I don't understand the translation of "you meiyou pıjiu".  Why is the word "meiyou" in the sentence when "meiyou" means "no"? Wouldn't the sentence then translate as "Don't you have beer"?  And why isn't "bu shi" used as "no"? What's the difference between "meiyou" and bu shi"?

Many thanks, suxiaoya!  Your explanation helped a lot.  I think it's kind of like the mass and count noun concept I learned when I studied French a long time ago.  

The measure word discussion you pointed out above helped a lot too!  It helped me to see how nouns are grouped together.  Thanks again :) !!

Ken talked about "kao" as being a measure word.  What's a measure word?

I really like this lesson.  I especially like the fact that words and expressions are repeated not only within this lesson but from other lessons.  And the cultural component is interesting too.  I saw those hongbao envelopes all over department stores in Haikou in December but had no idea what they were used for.  Keep up the good work!

Thanks again, dunderklumpen.  Being a complete beginner (again, probably the only one here) I didn't know the diacritical marks meant different tones.  I only know how to do diacritical marks in Spanish, French and Portuguese.  That's why I couldn't type the diacritical mark for "guai1".

Thanks, dunderklumpen.  I had thought it was the first tone.  But where did you see "guai1" on the transcript? I looked at the PDF transcript again and didn't see that.  Could it be because I have a Mac and not a PC?
