Hah! So 女生 and 小姑娘 are for girls under 25, 女性 is for women 25-30, and 女士 is for women over 30. OK, got it! One problem solved!

Next problem is how to tell a Chinese woman's age.

Wild East?  Why not Wild West?  Isn't China "west" of California?

@JanetPro, one trick that has worked for me re: bike theft (knock on wood) is to bring your bicycle lock from the States. Local thugs seem to have the local Giant locks all figured out but, so far, my Kryptonite lock has gone two years without a problem. That said, I wouldn't leave my bike outside overnight.

Hello RJ, understanding the rules? What rules? I took and passed the driver's exam here (in Chinese!), and I think it must be the hardest written test drivers' license test in the world. 100 questions, including a bunch of ones on procedural issues surrounding moving and reregistering your car in a new city. Other than city-specific registration, the rules here are pretty much the same as everywhere: don't run red lights, don't speed, etc. For example, a question might read:

When a red light turns into a green light the driver should:

a) Begin moving forward.

b) Begin moving backwards.

c) Stay where you are.

d) Pick your nose and call your mother on your cell phone.

The obvious answer is A; yet they are all wrong. The Chinese government needs to add a fifth choice for each question.

e) All of the Above.

Answer "e" is always right. Hence, one of the great thing about China. It's a country of infinite laws... that nobody pays any attention to!

Hello Zaphekiah, I think that "just in case" would be 万一. Is that what you meant?

Hello Vivace, actually Google copied Sogou's dictionary. In fact, they stole it and, at first, refused to admit doing so. However, some canny Hong Kong users noted that Google's IME included Sogou's dictionary word-for-word, including mistakes. Eventually Google recanted and agreed to license Sogou's dictionary.

A couple of links back to the original brouhaha.

I guess Google's new corporate motto reads something like, "Don't be Caught!"

Hello Podster, I heard from a good source in San Francisco's Chinatown that originally Chinese called San Francisco "金山" during the gold rush... hills of gold and all that. When the gold rush petered out, it acquired its current moniker, "旧金山."
