May 2, 2007 at 1:48 PMThere are several English translations of 西游记, some complete, others abridged. I can recommend the complete version translated by Anthony Yu, 1977 (ISBN 0-226-97150-3), but I'd be interested in hearing opions on the newer tranlation by W.J.F. Jenner, 2003. Both are very long, at 2000+ pages, but I can't imagine that the abridged versions do it justice!

May 3, 2007 at 5:25 AMDoesn't a 所 in front of a verb add some emphasis to the action as well as formality? Something like 他作的事~"The work he did" or "His work..." versus 他所作的事~"The work that he did..." ?
